A few gulls almost still. Dolphins surfacing very near. Then a school of fish jumped, creating brilliant silver white images in the air. No little…

Art Journaling – Creating Mandalas

As we journey through this week of the tenth anniversary of Katrina, we are seeing many reminders in the media and all around us. Some of our feelings this week may be expressed more freely with color and shapes than with words. If that is true for you, I invite you to try creating mandalas.…

Whether you lost your home and treasures in Katrina, lost nothing and have survivor’s guilt, went to the Gulf coast on work trips, you are a Katrina survivor, and journaling is one of the most healing ways you can tell your story.…

When Disaster Strikes!
If you or someone you know has been impacted by a disaster, these are some steps to take:
  • First – Ensure you and your family are safe.
  • If your disaster received a FEMA Declaration, be sure to register with FEMA even if you have insurance.
    http://www.disasterassistance.gov
    (800) 621-3362
    TTY (800) 462-7585
  • If your disaster does not receive a FEMA Declaration, pay close attention to local media for instructions on how to receive assistance.

  • File insurance claims.
  • Be sure you do not change the status of your property significantly before you have FEMA and insurance inspections.
  • Remember to stay close to your family and friends, tell your story to good listeners, and take care of yourself with good rest, nutrition, exercise, hydration, relaxation.

To Help Post Disaster...
  • Pray in your own tradition for survivors and those who serve them.
  • Pray in your own tradition for survivors and those who serve them.
  • Give to your favorite disaster organization.
  • To volunteer, affiliate with a responding organization. Your worshipping community may have an organized disaster response arm, or you can find a good one by going to the website of National VOAD (Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster) at http://www.nvoad.org. The list of members will show you trusted disaster organizations to whom you might donate or with whom you can affiliate.
