Releasing Ritual

Thursday night, March 26, 2015, Katrina’s Grace: Wind, Water and Wisdom went to press.

First, my dear friends Donna and Ben Toole and I celebrated a deeply meaningful ritual of release. We crumpled all the pages of the book with covers together so that it was a cylinder, put it in their fireplace on a piece of tin and offered it up to the Universe for its life to begin.

Sometimes the community can use help immediately; sometimes they need a few days to finish Search and Rescue and to get organized with work orders so that your…

Twice Resurrected Trees

Among the most devastating losses to the Mississippi coast in Katrina were the 200-year-old live oaks along the beach highway. Tall, stately, sometimes large enough for a deck high in the tree, sometimes leaning a bit from high winds, but always huge and magnificent.

Hope from the Butterflies

For many years butterflies have been my most deeply meaningful symbol of transformation. Our growth toward fullness of life always involves giving up who we are to become all we have the potential to be. So caterpillars willingly hang from a twig, weave their cocoons, and allow the transformation of their bodies into the exquisite…

What Survivors Do First

The first days after a disaster are filled with chaos and discovery after discovery of what we and our neighbors have lost. It is common to be confused, have a hard time making decisions, and wonder what to do. As one who has been there, I offer these first essential actions. In later blogs I…

When Disaster Strikes!
If you or someone you know has been impacted by a disaster, these are some steps to take:
  • First – Ensure you and your family are safe.
  • If your disaster received a FEMA Declaration, be sure to register with FEMA even if you have insurance.

    (800) 621-3362
    TTY (800) 462-7585
  • If your disaster does not receive a FEMA Declaration, pay close attention to local media for instructions on how to receive assistance.

  • File insurance claims.
  • Be sure you do not change the status of your property significantly before you have FEMA and insurance inspections.
  • Remember to stay close to your family and friends, tell your story to good listeners, and take care of yourself with good rest, nutrition, exercise, hydration, relaxation.

To Help Post Disaster...
  • Pray in your own tradition for survivors and those who serve them.

  • Give to your favorite disaster organization.
  • To volunteer, affiliate with a responding organization. Your worshipping community may have an organized disaster response arm, or you can find a good one by going to the website of National VOAD (Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster) at http://www.nvoad.org. The list of members will show you trusted disaster organizations to whom you might donate or with whom you can affiliate.
